While there are 22 large notes reported on the bank the notes are elusive. This note has a stamped signature for the president and penned by W.R. Long, Assistant Cashier. East St. Louis was initially settled as Illinoistown and can trace its settlement to 1797 with the establishment of a ferry across the Mississippi River connecting it to St. Louis. The name changed upon its incorporation in 1861. It was the organizational center of a major railroad strike in 1877, devastated by tornado damage in 1896 and the stage of racially-motivated labor riots in 1917.
