The census indicates there are eight Brown Backs recorded, and six are $5s, including the #1. This is a broadly margined note with excellent paper quality and purple stamped signatures. There have only been three public offerings, which shows a VF 20 $10 realizing $5,875 in 2015. East St. Louis was initially settled as Illinoistown and can trace its settlement to 1797 with the establishment of a ferry across the Mississippi River connecting it to St. Louis. The name changed upon its incorporation in 1861. It was the organizational center of a major railroad strike in 1877, devastated by tornado damage in 1896 and the stage of racially-motivated labor riots in 1917.
