This is the best of the 13 large notes reported from this St. Clair County bank. The pen signatures of R.E. Harwell, President and G.C. Huber, Cashier are excellent. Freeburg was platted in 1836 as the town of Urbana but was forced to change in 1859 upon learning of another Urbana in Illinois. It was officially incorporated in 1867 and enjoyed early mining success, in addition to being just 20 miles from St. Louis.
