Serial #1 Rarity
National Bank Notes > Illinois
Fairbury, First NB, 1987 #1
Fr. 382 $1 Original
Grade:
VF/XF
This has to be one of the rarest notes in the entire collection. This bank was not chartered until May 27, 1872, which was close to the end of the Original Series, and in fact you could say all Aces. This was a large size only bank from 1872 until 1910. After First Charters they issued 926 $50-$100 Brown Back sheets and 21 $50-$100 1882 Date Back sheets. So very few notes issued and so very long ago. Only one appearance by a Good-4, the other note is a $100 Brown Back in UNC! #1 First Charters continue to appear but they are certainly rare from locations such as this. The centerfold on this note is heavy but the pen signatures make it easy to overlook a fold. Fairbury is a town with a colorful history, beginning with the clandestine finishing of a railway through the town against a city ordinance passed previously and culminating in a series of fires suspected to be set intentionally in a feud between land owners.
