This is a very scarce bank from Wayne County that was the home of our friend, Carroll Hilliard; he was a devoted historian that would have enjoyed this lovely, and only known $20 Brown Back. There are six large notes reported from this farming community bank and there has been only one appearance of a large size from this charter. This note has quite the vanity signature of Mr. Scott, President. Fairfield was first settled in 1819 and remained quiet for its first few decades, owing much of its eventual development to railroad access. It is most known as the hometown of the Shelton Brothers Gang, bootleggers who met their end at the hands of the Chicago Mob.
