$100 1880 Monroe Silver Certificate Among Five Finest Known
Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates
Fr. 341 $100 1880
Grade:
AU
This gorgeous $100 black back silver certificate has an illustrious pedigree as it was part of the Jim Thompson Collection, sold by Stack's in December 1992 as EF. Next year, in October 1993, it was sold by the conservative and accurate David Koble as AU. Later it was sold by CAA as XF/AU and then on to Spink America in 1995. I believe that the overall quality is better than the Fr. 342 catalogued next that CGA calls Ch. AU 55, but the end result is that this is a beautiful note that is certainly within the top five notes, grade-wise, none of which are listed as UNC in private collections. There are 23 recorded, five in museums, etc and there is only one UNC. All of the collectors with this note in mind can see the quality for themselves. The only UNC known has the small seal and it brought $240,000 last October.
