Without a doubt, this is one of the best items in this fantastic collection. The quality is amazing for a national, let alone a Second Charter. The margins are huge and the paper is as fresh as the day it was printed. This bank is known for the Black Charters, not a rarity like this. State issued notes are actually scarcer than the Territorials, with 10 notes in the count. In October 2006 I sold the 'E' position from this #1 sheet, and it brought $55,200. With the demand for trophy nationals as strong as ever, I expect this trophy to do as well. The note is the 'G' plate position from the sheet. In the border is a spot where ink from the vice president's pen dripped during signing and recently the drip 'popped' off leaving a small dent. Penned signatures of J.C. McShane, Vice President and H.H. Lake, Cashier. When last sold this note realized $80,500. From the Rocky Mountain Collection. ---- In May, 1859, gold was discovered by John Gregory in what became known as Gregory Gulch. Thousands poured into the area, and Central City was so named because of its central location among the various camps such as Blackhawk and Mountain City. The population grew from 598 in 1860 to a peak of 3,114 in 1900. By 1920 the population had dropped to 552, where it stayed for another decade. No wonder both national banks had closed by 1933.
