National Bank Notes > Colorado
Colorado Springs, City NB, W6238
Fr. 635 $10 1902ND
Grade:
Fine
This is the second title for this bank, having been chartered in 1902 as the First National Bank of Colorado City. This average circulated specimen has no problems and sports strong signatures. Just 12 large notes plus a single uncut sheet and even fewer small notes are reported. This is a bank that seldom surfaces. From the Rocky Mountain Collection. ----- A Union Army veteran and railroad entrepreneur named General William J. Palmer was key to the establishment of Colorado Springs, located just east of Colorado City. The General was opposed to the wild ways of Colorado City and saw to it that his planned community stayed alcohol free, and in fact, Colorado Springs remained dry until the end of prohibition in 1933. The town that Palmer founded was first called Fountain Colony and became Colorado Springs, for the mineral water springs at present day Manitou Springs.
