America's First Federal Paper Among The Finest Known #38 Of 100 Greatest Notes

Large Size Type Notes > Demand Notes

Fr. 2 $5 1861 Philadelphia
Grade: CGA XF 45     CGA
This is, without a doubt, absolutely one of the finest $5 demand notes in existence today. There is an uncirculated example from Philadelphia, another AU and this note that I called Ch. AU in 2000 but has since been graded XF-45 by CAA. I am sure of one thing, this note is an outstanding $5 demand note. Unlike most that were carried by soldiers during the Civil War, someone must have cherished this piece, possibly sent home by a volunteer who did not have the good fortune to return to his loved ones. These notes were issued to the troops in the Civil War because they were the first paper money and could be mailed home easier than bullion. The centering on this note is really nice for they type, the color is exceptional and the paper quality, while probably not completely "as made", is very beautiful. Graded XF 45 by CGA.
