$3 United States of America

TN-16 This is one example of the $3 note printed by the U.S. Treasury Department under the Act of Congress, February 24, 1815. This is an unusual remainder of an issue that was intended for circulation but were never given legal tender status. In fact, it was rejected by Congress without debate. This issue traded at par as long as there were specie payments but when they were suspended their value began to fall. They were funded quickly after the war in December 1814. There is only a single signed and issued example known.
