Kirtland Safety Society Bank $10
Grade: PMG VF 30     PMG
This early Mormon note is dated 8th Mar. 1837. Issued after the state of Ohio had denied the bank a charter, these notes caused all sorts of problems. The bank soon refused to redeem them, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon, who signed this note, were each fined $1,000, and the Mormons started their emigration west to Illinois. This note is special, as it was later reissued in Utah and was signed by Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, N(ewel) K. Whitney, church leaders in Utah. A fabulous piece of history. This note is Haxby OH 245 G10 and Rust 71. PMG notes: stains.
