This Weld County bank note is lovely with excellent paper quality. The stamped signatures are light but visible. ---- Greeley began in 1869 as the Union Colony, a plan that was promoted by New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley. Greeley had visited the West in 1859 and was intrigued with the agricultural possibilities of the country. The colony plan was greatly supported by Nathan Meeker, the paper's agricultural editor who had lived in an Ohio cooperative community in the 1840's and 1850's. It was during the publicity campaign to find settlers run by the paper that Horace Greeley popularized the phrase "Go West, young man". Nathan Meeker was finally recognized for his role in helping to settle the West in 1883, four years after he was killed by Ute Indians, when the town of Meeker, Colorado was established.
