This sheet must have seen more care as there are fewer folds and it's somewhat more attractive. ---- In the fall of 1863 a camp was established along the Cache la Poudre River and was called Camp at Laporte. Its purpose was to protect the train and stage coaches that carried the mail. The next spring Colonel William O. Collins arrived with his troops, a vote was taken, and the name was changed to Camp Collins. Floods washed out the site in 1864, so the camp was moved a few miles away and called Fort Collins. This was a popular stopping place for travelers crossing the country on the Overland Trail and many stayed. The fort never had walls and was decommissioned in 1867, yet people continued to settle in the town. An agricultural colony was established in 1872 and that caused the population to soar. Sugar beets and sheep were among the regions first industries. The beets were refined for the sugar, and as it turned out, the sheep loved to eat the beet tops.
