Here is an amazing find from Greeley's shortest lived national bank. This bank was chartered in June 1911 and closed on March 22, 1915. The bank issued 1,130 sheets of 1902 Date Back $5s and 924 sheet of 1902 Date Back $10-10-10-20. This note is the sole survivor and was cut from the bottom of the first sheet. Signed by D.A. Canfield, President and George D. Statler, Cashier. A beautiful note from the first sheet and 'D' position that has the bottom selvage as well. From the Rocky Mountain Collection. ---- Greeley began in 1869 as the Union Colony, a plan that was promoted by New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley. Greeley had visited the West in 1859 and was intrigued with the agricultural possibilities of the country. The colony plan was greatly supported by Nathan Meeker, the paper's agricultural editor who had lived in an Ohio cooperative community in the 1840's and 1850's. It was during the publicity campaign to find settlers run by the paper that Horace Greeley popularized the phrase "Go West, young man". Nathan Meeker was finally recognized for his role in helping to settle the West in 1883, four years after he was killed by Ute Indians, when the town of Meeker, Colorado was established.
