Lot #1019 - Durango, First NB, 2637

National Bank Notes > Colorado

Durango, First NB, 2637
Fr. 1803-1 $50 1929T1 #A000004A
Grade: Ch. AU
This is one of the largest banks on the Western side of the Rockies. The bank was chartered in 1882, but by the time the 1902 Plain Backs were issued, the bank was only ordering $50s and $100s. This low serial #4 is as fresh as the day it was printed, but has picked up a faint center bend along the way. This new to the census $50 makes an even two dozen reported, and is the finest known to date. From the Rocky Mountain Collection. ---- Durango was established in 1880 when the railroad decided to swing 2 miles south when Animas City refused to grant concessions. Well, Animas City no longer exists and Durango became the county seat. Possibly was named for the nearby Durango Mine, or perhaps for Durango, Mexico after a visit there by former Territorial Governor A. C. Hunt.
