Emil Ganz, President and S. Oberfelder, Cashier. The Territory of Arizona was formed in 1863, and did not become a state until 1912. The first national bank in the territory was chartered in Tucson in 1881. This bank was not far behind, being chartered in 1886. This great note passed from Ossie to Monte Sherwin, whose collection was part of the nucleus of the first Hickman-Oakes auction in 1976. The note sold then for $2,730, but expect to pay more today!
Within the field of Territorial National Bank Notes of Arizona there are only three notes that are serial #1: a $10 Sandoval National Bank of Nogales, serial #1 Red Seal in VF, a First National Bank of Tucson, serial #1 $5 First Charter in VG/Fine and the note offered here, a $20 National Bank of Arizona at Phoenix in VF (all grades per census information).
Clearly among those three this will most likely remain the most affordable to collectors, as the Nogales is in the Higgins Museum and the Tucson is part of a collection of #1 Territorials being currently formed, so I expect it to be in tight hands for the foreseeable future. You now have the opportunity to acquire this jewel that was last offered in 1997 as part of the J.L. Irish Collection of Territorials.
