While Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon were attempting to start a bank in Kirtland, OH, the Mormon Church owned The Bank of Monroe, MI. Oliver Cowdery, who signed this note as President, was one of the three witnesses of the golden plates and a close confidant of Joseph Smith. This note, dated September 1, 1836 predates the notes of the Kirtland Safety Society Bank. Like the Kirtland Bank, this bank also failed in 1838.. This note is Haxby MI 280 G24 and Rust 21.
