Grade:
PCGS Ch. New 63
Your cataloger practically fell out of his chair when this note showed up on his desk. An absolutely mesmerizing example from this prohibitively scarcer 1767 issue for which 99% of the survivors are VG/Fine notes with splits, tears, pins, etc. This pristine example rightfully has the look of a Gem in every regard with three huge margins (including deckled right edge) and an essentially full left indent. Couden and Clapham placed their exquisitely detailed signatures in the open bottom field. The full texture of the paper is clearly visible and is quite different from the common 1774 notes; it is this crispness of the paper which accounts for the easy cracking of the paper that is so common. Whenever notes from this series are encountered with any grade they are invariably whole denominations since virtually all of the fractional denomination notes are in tatters when seen. During the Ford sale of 2006 in Atlanta a couple of these were sold that were Ch. CU with light sheet fold and they brought five-figure prices. It would not surprise us in the least bit to see a note such as this, in a Ch. CU holder, return to that price level.
