Fr. 285a $10 1878 Triple Signature

An evenly circulated $10 triple signature silver certificate that was described as follows in the Levitan sale (Lot 163) in 1998: An extremely rare type with only five reported examples in collectors hands. This note appears to fall in the middle of the census and it is the Hessler illustration. Originally part of the H. Freeman Collection, then to Amon Carter, on to Frank Levitan via Hickman-Oakes and to Lyn F. Knight is 1987. Obviously the note has seen considerable circulation but has retained strong color and a reasonable amount of body for the grade. The top margin has been slightly trimmed to remove roughness. Engraved by A.U. Wyman and with the Scofield-Gilfillan signatures. This note is a little close on the top but it has decent overall appearance.
