Lot #1259 - Galena, NB, M3279

National Bank Notes > Illinois

Galena, NB, M3279
Fr. 616 $10 1902DB
Grade: VF/XF
A high grade circ note with a great look. There are only 10 large notes reported on this bank and even a couple of UNCs. Stamped signatures of W. Ford, President and J.P. Mahony, Cashier. Galena was founded as a steamboat hub to cross the Mississippi River and as a mining site, mining for its namesake. It saw significant early success, rivaling Chicago s population in 1928, just seven years after the first settlers arrived. The decreased demand for lead brought a sharp decline to the city in the mid-20th century.
