A Choice fresh $5 from this Tazewell County bank that used their German-American title until 1918. One of 11 large notes reported and with excellent black signatures. Pekin was surveyed in 1829 and named by the wife of one of the first landowners, who thought that their new town was exactly across the world from Peking, China. Pekin was divided during the Civil War, having both northern and southern settlers. There was an Underground Railroad stop in the town and was the site of the first organizational meeting of the Union League of America.
