This is the only $5 Brown Back reported and it's extremely well used, yet part of the cashier's signature is still visible. Rantoul was laid out by the Illinois Central Railroad in 1854 as Rantoul Station, named for a director of the railroad. The Station was dropped in 1862. In 1917 the Chanute Field was opened nearby, becoming Chanute Air Force Base. Its closure in 1993 has been devastating.
