___187_. The Manhattan Silver Mining Company, located in New York, formed a branch in Austin, Nevada in 1863. The company was the largest silver producer in the district by 1867. This company was the first to use the Stedfeldt Furnace, which reduced costs by half, and continued production until 1888.
