Of the four banks in Mattoon, two are quite rare and this is one of them. Just 394 sheets of $50-$100 Red Seals were issued before this bank was liquidated in 1911. The only notes known on the bank are a #1 Lazy Deuce and this $50 Red Seal. Both pieces were offered in 2007, the Deuce by us in June where it sold for $46,000, and this $50 by Spink a month later at $17,250. Signed in pen by Lewis L. Lehman, President, and R. A. Barenther, Cashier. A great combination of bank rarity and type rarity all in one note.
