I wouldn't have been so quick to label the First National Bank the hometown favorite if I saw this equally compelling early $5 First Charter from Louis Van Belkum's hometown. This bank has virtually identical stats as the First National Bank. It was in business from 1865 to 1885 and issued only First Charters. This note is unique and very pretty. Signed by Theo. Gilbert and Frederic Davis. An exquisite piece of Grand Rapids history. The note was a must-have for Dr. Lee when it appeared in the Van Belkum collection in 2009 where it realized $14,950. The Dr. Wallace Lee Collection.
