George W. Casilear's Personal Scrapbook of Engravings and Vignettes
George Casilear first worked for Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. In 1862 he went to work for the National Currency Bureau, which later became the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Blank face. The spine states "Scrap Book. Vignettes." This book contains approximately 110 engravings, photos and vignettes. There are some really cool things in here that deserve mention: autograph card of James G. Blaine, Dec. 1881, biblical scene of Saul's conversion, views of Hurst castle, Lake of Killarney, Hyde Park, Gowanus Heights, Thousand Island House, ruins of Fort Ticonderoga, Lake Winnipisseogee, Lake George, Village of Sing Sing, Shrine of the Nativity in Bethlehem, etc. Possibly the most interesting item found within is a meeting scene done by his brother John H. Casilear, who died in 1848 at the age of 24. George Casilear has written a nice biography of his brother in the right margin next to it.
