This bank was chartered early and has 38 large notes recorded and there are no other $5 First Charters known, yet there are seven Aces and Deuces. The note carries a plate date of February 3, 1865. Pen signatures of Lewis Monroe, President and the cashier. Established in 1831 and incorporated in 1865, Charleston was named for its first postmaster, Charles Morton. It was the site of one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858, as well as the home of Lincoln s father from 1831. In 1847 Charleston s courthouse was the site of Matson v. Ashmore, a case concerning runaway slaves in which Lincoln argued for their return under the Fugitive Slave Act.
