Fr. 530 $100 1882BB
Grade: XF
The $100 Brown Backs from Kansas are few and far between. This note, from the Lindsey Collection, is the sole survivor from the 2,380 sheets of each $50s and $100s printed for this bank, and it's dated December 7, 1901, shortly before the end of the Brown Back era as I understand it. There was also a $50 Brown Back saved that has yet to reappear for collectors. This note was acquired by the consignor from our June 2006 Memphis auction at a cost of $18,975 where it was graded, possibly optimistically, as XF 45. The note is pen signed by Wm. Sims and possibly Wm. Henderson. The First National Bank of Topeka (the second to use this title) was established in March 1882, just prior to the Second Charter Period, which allowed the bank to issue First Charter Period notes. The bank succeeded the firm of Henry Taylor. The first president was Theodore Curran and D.A. Moulton as cashier. This bank went into receivership in July 1903 for 'incompetent management'.
