May 29, 1861. Issued from the new Confederate capital of Richmond, the central design of this note features a steam train rounding a bend, flanked by the standing figures of Justice and Minerva at the left and right respectively. Signed by Robert Tyler as Register and E.C. Elmore as Treasurer. A dark green overprint featuring the denomination appears at the center, neatly framing the principal vignette. Only 5,798 notes of this type were issued. A few stains and mottled surfaces, particularly visible on the blank verso.
