This is likely the single most valuable note and one of the centerpieces of the Mel Wilmore's collection! We believe that only two serial #1 star notes on the #1 district Federal Reserve Notes have ever surfaced over the years. The only example we can recall is the $5 2006 FRN IA00000001* sold by Mike Abramson. That note and it's mates in the same pack were eventually re-sold for over six figures after the pack was split up. Serial number #00000001 notes are always in demand, while #00000001 star notes are often the centerpiece of even the most advanced collections. BUT....A Serial #00000001 STAR on DISTRICT #1 is an offering we cannot ever recall appearing at public auction before. At the August 2013 ANA auction, Stacks-Bowers sold three #1 star notes: The $2 1976 FRN L00000001* in PCGS 64 PPQ realized $18,800, the $100 1934 FRN D00000001* PMG 66 EPQ sold for $88,125 and the $500 FRN J00000001* PCGS 63 PPQ realized $176,250. While all of these notes were indeed rare, none of these three serial #1 Star Notes was printed on district #1. We are confident that the note being offered today is the ONLY known $10 FRN serial #00000001 STAR on the #1 district ever offered at public auction. Coming up with an accurate price estimate is quite a challenge for this treasure. We believe we are being very, very conservative and that this note could bring two to three times our estimate.
