When you see this note it should be a love affair. This is the finest known of the three hand-signed 1878 $20 Silver Certificates by J.C. Hopper that are known in any form, public or private. This note has been off the market for 45 years since it was sold by Superior on March 30, 1971, Lot 1104 at $750. This is he earliest and finest known example with excellent paper quality and it shows very little circulation. This 1878 series was issued by the Assistant Treasurer of the U.S., New York, NY. and was engraved and printed by the BEP. I have never seen any definitive date to know if New York or Washington notes were printed first. Someone else is more likely than I to solve the puzzle. We sold #A3196 at $149,500 in June 2007 and three years ago Stacks/Bowers sold a VF 20 Apparent for $58,750. PCGS notes: margin trimmed, minor restoration.
