Salida, Commercial NB, W7888
Fr. 599 $5 1902ND
Grade: VF/XF
Wonderful signatures adorn this lightly circulated $5 from this tough Chaffee County institution. While all three of Salida s banks issued large notes, survivors are scarce to rare. This piece is only the sixth example to surface from the Commercial NB. With small size examples even harder to come by, expect this note to receive considerable attention. The most recent large note to sell from this bank was in our March 2010 auction, where a Fine 15 brought over $2,400. No doubt this finest known will exceed that amount. From the Rocky Mountain Collection. ---- First called South Arkansas when it was founded in 1880, the name Salida was adopted in 1881. The name means "exit" or "outlet" in Spanish, which fits the town's location at the spot where the Arkansas Valley opens up. Salida was originally a railroad town and was an important link for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. As the rail operations pulled back, ranching took over. Today the most prominent business is tourism.
