Here is a very nice, pen signed note from this Huerfano County bank in southern Colorado and it represents the only note currently in the census on this previously unreported town. Now there are only two unreported town banks in the entire state, an amazing feat. This was the only national bank in Walsenburg and they issued 750 sheets of $10-10-10-20 Red Seals and 1,346 sheets of $10-10-10-20 Date Backs. A very low total issue and Kelly says $400 was the large outstanding in 1935. ---- Walsenburg is the county seat of Huerfano County. The settlement was first established as La Plaza de los Leones on the north side of the Cuchara River. It was renamed Walsenburg after Fred Walson who opened up a large mercantile business in 1870, making the town an attractive location for German settlers. In 1876, Walsen also opened the area's first coal mine, and the development of the town was influenced for a century by coal mining in the region. Robert Ford, the assassin of outlaw Jesse James, operated a combination saloon and gambling house in Walsenburg.
