Lot #1220 - Reno, Nixon NB, P8424

National Bank Notes > Nevada

Reno, Nixon NB, P8424
Fr. 641 $20 1902RS
Grade: Fine
These signatures of Geor. F. Turrittin, Vice President and F.M. Lee, Cashier are black and clear. The note has rough top and bottom edges, otherwise it's problem free. This is one of nine Red Seals which are a large part of the 23 large notes reported with this title. The title was chosen for a founder, Geo. Nixon, and he signed at least a few notes. There are also Red Seals from Tonapoh, Goldfield, Ely and two from Elko. Any Nevada Red Seal is excessively rare. --- Reno was ‘the spot’ in Nevada in the early days and that’s where the Nevada First Charters are from. The gambling was big and this was the commercial hub for decades and the national banking period was long gone before business in the state moved to the southern side. These banks were chartered to print National Bank Notes. First #2478 was chartered in 1880 and closed in 1896. Then the Farmers & Merchants National Bank of Reno was chartered in November 1903, in June 1929 they changed the title to the First National Bank of Reno. Three years later, in 1906, the Nixon National Bank of Reno was chartered. Both banks issued Red Seals because that was the note they were printing at that time.
