This is an ultra-rare pre-printing stock error. Research by Frederick Bart lists only three known examples, of which this is one. This piece had four circular solid black marks applied to the currency paper before the printings; every error expert to examine the note has arrived at the same conclusion. As if the pre-printed stock error were not enough, this incredible piece also has the overprint on the back, solidly qualifying as a legitimate double error. A combination which makes us shake our heads in utter disbelief. In establishing the value of any item of which only three exist, the estimate can be tricky. A nearly identical error note in our November 2005 sale brought a hammer price of $9,500.
