Fr. 831 $50 1918 St. Louis #H115A
Grade:
Ch. CU
This is the only Federal Reserve district to issue fifties, and most were owned by William A. Philpott at one time or another. Because this was short-lived, and heavily promoted by Philpott, the type remains very rare with 54 notes reported. There never seems to be many available as all type collectors need this to represent the type. Wow, what a pedigree for even a $50 St. Louis FRBN. We have established that this note originally came through Farran Zerbe, one of the greatest early numismatists and coin dealers, showman to L.S. Werner, long-time ANA Sergeant At Arms and mentor to William Anton, the notes next curator (early 1980s) to a serious, private numismatists and now only its first public offering. Not even the collections of Harley Freeman, B. Max Mehl, Amon Carter or William P. Donlon had this note. This note has great centering and is just a bit flat, as were virtually all of this issue. I call it Ch. CU and it certainly is one of the finest I've seen.
