Fr. 344 $100 1891
Grade:
XF/AU
I am always proud to offer notes like this Monroe $100 1891 Silver Certificate that may well be the finest in existence today, but it is more likely that it is tied for, or nearly identical to, another of the 22 examples recorded with the same Tillman-Morgan signature combination. There appears to be at least two better for the type that are Fr. 343, these are otherwise identical. One of those sold in the Rickey Collection (Lot 26) for $92,000 only a few short months ago and it seems very low today. This note is quite lovely and it has excellent centering, beautiful, bold color and excellent paper quality. The issue was 312,000, but in 1897 there was an attempt to recall the entire issue because of superb counterfeits made by William M. Jacobs. That would help account for the rarity of this issue.
