Each year I have the opportunity to handle many important notes, but from time to time we get to handle a truly exciting rarity and this is such a note. This was the first bank chartered, in 1865, on this Cole County location. There were 2,800 sheets of $1 and $2 First Charters printed. This is the first note printed by this bank, and it was saved quite well as it has even circulation. It also has clear, pen signatures of C.M. Dole, President and J. W. True, Cashier. I can find a Dole Building and a Dole Road, both in Mattoon today, but I found no other information on C.M. Dole. There are only 32 serial #1 Lazy Deuces recorded to date, and this jewel is new to that census.
