This is definitely the most common of any red seal Territorial, but it also comes from as popular a destination as the country has to offer. This state is certainly in the last frontier. The story is well known about a coin dealer, Joe Wells, of Topeka, Kansas, uncovering this hoard of uncut sheets and single notes, and how John Hickman bought a sheet, and a cut sheet and so on. All of that commotion has allowed us to forget today that this is an important part of any Territorial collection. There are only 35 red seals, and some are probably still in sheet form. Many of the notes, like this one, were cut from folded sheets. Do you think they were carried by a miner returning from a successful foray into gold mining in Alaska, or knowing the stories about Joe Wells, possibly procuring from a lady helping those gold miners that had returned to the Midwest? I doubt we will ever know. With the price increase and demand for Territorials, it won't be long before we say, "Why didn't I get my Alaska red seal when they were still affordable." We must remember that this is the only area that carries the title "District" and issued notes as such. This governmental distinction was from 1884, when it was the Department of Alaska, to 1912, when Alaska became a Territory. The quality is so fresh and the pen signatures so clear we should not overlook this note that Joe Hensley held so dear.
