Lima, established in 1831, is the seat of Allen County. Lima grew steadily, building its first school in 1832, its first newspaper in 1836 and its first train in 1854. In 1885, Benjamin Faurot drilled for natural gas at his paper mill, spurred by nearby Findlay's success, and instead found oil. Although Lima did not yield astronomical amounts of oil, the discovery was enough to bring John D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil to Lima and, for almost a decade, Lima had the largest oil field in the U.S. This bank is in the same category as the First National Bank of Leetonia. It is a Brownback-only bank with an insufficient five notes available to collectors. Of those, only one pretends to equal this piece in quality. The bank closed in June of 1907, just before it was to be extended and issue red seals. Second seal. Group 7. Plate date 8/6/87.
