National Bank Notes > Illinois

Charleston, First NB, 763
Fr. 380 $1 Original
Grade: PMG VF 30 EPQ     PMG
The first piece from a small collection of notes exhibiting top or bottom selvage. Each one was selected for its rarity or condition. Some have been off the market for years, such as this example, and some have never appeared at all. This particular note was part of an intact sheet that was saved, although not with the care all of us would like to see. It was cut apart many years ago, with the single notes suffering various degrees of circulation along the way. This 'A' position with the top selvage is pretty nice, with the folds limited to three vertical and a couple horizontals. PMG has mentioned that a few minor issues in the top selvage has not affected the body of the note, and therefore assigned it an EPQ qualifier. The earliest appearance of a $1 from the sheet was in a 1990 Smythe sale when the 'C' position, in VF, was sold. The 'B' position first appeared about a year ago and was graded PCGS XF 45 PPQ. This note has about the same folds as the XF, just a little heavier. The $2 from the sheet has yet to surface at a public sale in recent memory. When Q. David Bowers put together his collection of Aces and Walter T. Herget assembled his massive Illinois collection, this is the note they both chose. That is good enough for me.
