National Bank Notes > Colorado
Denver, Colorado Territory, City NB, 1955
Fr. 401 $5 1875
Grade:
VG/Fine
The City National Bank of Denver was chartered in 1872 and it issued various First Charter Territorials and a handful of state Brown Backs, which have never appeared. This $5 is new to the census and almost a mate to the other $5 reported. The Deuce and $10 seem pretty much the same. The last example, offered in the Mayer Collection, brought $43,125 in 2008. This note comes with a letter dated 1928 when it was sent to Maritz Allen Barth of Denver. Maritz Barth was the signer of this note. He was born in Germany and moved to America as a young adult. For a time before the Civil War he was living in Platte County, near Kansas City, but the Barths were anti-slavery and the area was pro-slavery so he moved to Colorado with his brother. They moved back to St. Louis and then back West, making money in the shoe business, then general merchandise, but escalating real estate prices made him a fortune. The story and the letter are part of the lot.
