Rare Fr. 1a Demand Note

Large Size Type Notes > Demand Notes

Fr. 1a $5 1861
Grade: PCGS VF 25     PCGS
For collectors who desire an example of a hand-signed Demand Note, the $5 New York issue affords the only real opportunity to satisfy that need, as all the other possibilities are prohibitively rare. Fortunately, for those who require both rarity and condition, this example happens to be one of the nicest pieces known. The note was once owned by Robert Schermerhorn, then appeared in a 1988 Stack s auction. It was later sold privately to our consignor in 1997. Probably the best attribute of the note, and most important considering what it is, are the signatures. They are bold and unfaded, with a clearly penned for the for both the Register of the Treasury and the Treasurer of the United States. Another example in the same grade was sold in the FUN sale this year, bringing nearly $53,000. However, that example did not show a clear for the after the name in the Register of the Treasury location, making this piece clearly better. Only two of the other nine known Fr. 1a are higher grade. One XF 45 brought $94,000 eighteen months ago, with the other XF 45 selling in our August 2005 auction for $43,700. Both are likely to be off the market for some time to come. Don t miss this opportunity to acquire one of our classic paper money rarities.
