After leaving Kirtland, OH, the Mormons moved to Nauvoo, IL. Here, the church established a regiment of the Illinois Militia to help safeguard members of the church from mob violence. This note, issued on July 25, 1843 was for payment of debts to the Legion and could be redeemed for specie if money was available in the Legion treasury. This note is signed by Wilson Law, Major General, Joseph Smith, Lieutenant General, and Jno. S. Fullmer, the Quartermaster General. This scrip is much rarer than those issued in Ohio or Michigan.
