Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender
Fr. 58 $2 1917 #A100000000A

The one hundred million serial numbered notes are the rarest and most coveted of all the fancy numbers. This monumental piece traces its pedigree to the great collections of Harley Freeman, Amon Carter and Jack Fisher. The last time it made an auction appearance was at a B. Max Mehl sale in 1953. This is the only 100,000,000 number to be found on a 1917 $2 Legal Tender and its importance cannot be overstated. Its value should not be confused with the more often seen Eagles, but rather compared to the unique 1914 $5 FRN that sold in 2006 for over $32,000. All told, there are only 21 large size notes with the hundred million serial number and over half of those are Eagles. The fact that this note is unique and from the collectible $2 series, should make it even more significant. The paper is fresh and bright and the margins are above average, especially for a 1917 $2 Legal Tender. The serial numbers are embossed and there are two fingerprint smudges on the back bottom margin. We also note a tiny internal tear that has been so expertly repaired that it defies discovery. A wonder note that should bring a strong price. Graded Ch. Abt. UNC 58 EPQ by PMG.
