The history of Los Angeles can be traced back as far as 1542, with the first arrival of Spanish explorers. The mission for which the town is named was founded in 1781 by Spanish settlers branching off from another mission. After the battle of Rio San Gabriel in 1847, Americans took control of the town, which was incorporated in 1850. The first railroad, the Southern Pacific, arrived in 1876, and oil was first discovered in the area in 1892. By 1923, Los Angeles was supplying one quarter of the world's petroleum. Although notes from this bank are among the most available large size notes on California, there are still only five $5 BB's reported, with this example being new to the census.
