October 8, 1862. Little is known about this merchant except that a few pieces of his scrip that have made it into the collecting community. A skull and crossbones vignette is at the center and directly below are the words, "To Counterfeit is Death." Birch's choice of the skull and crossbones has insured the popularity of his scrip. There are a couple of small edge cuts and some staining at the top.
