Metropolis Advertising Note for New Town ca. 1910
Grade:
VF/XF
A very rare advertising note for "A New Town Opportunity at Metropolis, Nevada" on the back of a facsimile 1861 Confederate $10 note. Metropolis, now a ghost town ruin in Elko County, was created by the Pacific Reclamation Company to be the center of a huge farming district. Development was handled by the Metropolis Improvement Co. of Salt Lake City, which sold lots and attracted residents. An amusement hall, train depot, modern school, post office and fantastic Metropolis Hotel, with running water and central heat, were built. But the farms did not play out, and the post office closed in 1942. All that remains are ruins of the school and hotel. A very rare item and the first Metropolis-related item we have handled.
