Bernville, located in heavily collected Berks County, was founded by immigrant Stephanus Umbenhauer, who named the village for his hometown of Bern, Switzerland. When the Union Canal was completed in 1830, Bernville's proximity to several locks made the town a primary and prosperous canal port.
