Griffin & Hawkins, Courtland
Grade: VF
Circa 1920s. Ad note for Griffin & Hawkins Pool Room, Courtland, Arizona, on back of facsimile 1861 $10 Confederate note. A ghost town today, Courtland was once a large mining town in Cochise County. In 1909, several hundred people swarmed to the region as the Calumet and Arizona, Copper Queen, Leadville, and Great Western mining companies all began operations. Eventually, home to about 2000 people, Courtland had a post office, newspaper, movie theater, butcher shop and more. The town survived into the Depression but lost its post office in 1942. By that time many of the buildings had already been moved or razed. Courtland is a deserted ruin today. The first item we have ever had from this obscure and very rare location.
